October 3: Wires in the Walls

On Day Two of electrical fun, Phil ran to town for parts twice, but that was fine, because the work went on here without him. Phil said, "They are professionals, but watching them work ... they work just like I do. Work, think about it, talk about it, look for the tool that they had in hand moments before. I am so gratified to know that my method isn't inferior."

I wonder a bit if that is more the laid-back, not-Type A personality, as I suspect there are electricians out there who have all their tools at hand at all times. But there are also people who are more like Phil, and are successful and happy. So that's good.

They worked down at the building today, rather than up at the barn. I think a good bit of wiring happened down in the crawl space, as there is not a ton of difference in the overall appearance of the space.

The other thing that surprised me has been the boxes. Have I mentioned this? I think of electrical boxes as sort of self-contained units. You buy a box, and it has the wires in it and you kind of run things to it (like old-style speakers on a home boom box, if you've ever had to connect those red and black wires). But, no. A box comes empty, and the electrician has to run wires into it and through it. I wouldn't have guessed that.

I haven't been overly keen to cook major meals lately. Tuna noodle casserole is a great standby (open the cans of tuna and the meat is done!). So it was sweet today when Isaiah volunteered to make sausage and eggs for lunch. He thawed the sausages, and cooked them, and cut them, and mixed them with eggs. Phil came in some half hour later and asked if I'd had my portion. Isaiah had made enough for me, too, as well as himself and Phil and a brother or two. That was so dear!

And though I was a bit surprised, as I didn't really remember asking for any, they tasted great. And how wonderful to have such a competent 9-year-old.
